Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday claimed a shocking claim that Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi visited Pakistan at the invitation of the country’s intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi slammed Himanta Biswa Sarma and questioned his mental state due to issues on the house front.
Himant Biswa Sarma alleged that Gaurav Gogoi’s visit to Pakistan was at ISI invitation
Speaking to reporters at an official program, CM Himant Biswa Sarma said that Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi did not visit Pakistan for tourism, but to get training under the direct invitation of Pakistan’s Home Department.
CM Sarma said, “Gaurav Gogoi went to Pakistan at ISI’s invitation. For the first time, I want to say that he went to Pakistan on the invitation of ISI. We have that document. He went there to get training.”
“Gaurav Gogoi went there after receiving a letter from the Pakistan Home Department. He went there after the Government of Pakistan. Not Foreign Affairs, not Cultural Ministry, he went there at the invitation of Pakistan Home Department,” Sarma claimed, it is a “serious matter … more action will be taken … more action will be taken.”
Himanta further alleged that Gogoi worked closely with the Pakistani establishment during his visit.
The Assam CM distinguished it from the invitations issued by Pakistan’s foreign affairs or cultural departments, stating that Gogoi’s visit was specifically approved by the Home Department, which he described as “dangerous”.
The Chief Minister warned that Gaurav Gogoi’s “roads are closed” and the government has already seen evidence, but time is needed to get official documents through diplomatic channels.
CM Himant Sarma also urged the public to wait for the official disclosure and avoided further comments till the time limit.
Government of Assam promises evidence till 10 September
CM Himant Sarma said that the Assam government has documentary evidence supporting these allegations and has promised to make all the evidence public by 10 September after proper verification.
Emphasizing the seriousness of the case, Himant Sarma said, “When does the Home Department send an invitation? It only provides training.”
Accusations expand on the family of Congress MP Gogoi
The Assam CM also accused Gogoi’s British wife, Elizabeth Kalbourne of having a relationship with Pakistan, alleging that he had traveled between India and Pakistan 19 times and continued to receive salary from NGOs in Pakistan with ISI connections.
CM Himant Sarma criticized the media sections to reduce the gravity of the allegations and called Gaurav Gogoi to prevent the “childish statement” from demanding evidence, claiming that the authentication by the courts was only the remaining step.
Sarma defends BJP, warned of action against similar cases
Sarma defended the BJP’s stance, claiming that if any BJP leader gets equal relations, action will be taken rapidly.
The Assam CM also highlighted the boycott of Gogoi from the all-party delegation of the government on Operation Sindoor, which aims to rally a global support against Pakistan-provided terrorism.
Gogoi strongly denied the allegations, question on Sarma’s mental state
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has strongly denied the allegations, called him “nonsense” and questioned the mental state of CM Himant Sarma.
The political spat has intensified, Gogoi claims to provide evidence to challenge Sarma and to reveal more details in September, indicating a long battle on claims.
In a series of posts on X, Gogoi said Sarma’s recent comment was “crazy and nonsense” and he was behaving like a “IT cell troll” without talking with facts.
In the Lok Sabha, the deputy leader of the Congress said, “For some reason I am best aware that I have been on his radar since my entry into Assam. He has made many baseless comments about me in the last 13 years. The most recently a limit on madness and absurd.”
He expressed his concern for the health status of the Chief Minister of Assam.
“It is often said that when something is disturbed at home, it is reflected in the mental state of the person. We will ensure that after 2026 he gets some rest,” Gogoi said.
Assembly elections are going to be held in Assam next year.
