The Himachal Pradesh government has ordered the closure of all government and private colleges and schools including district institutions and training institutes (diet) by 7 September, in view of continuous heavy rainfall and widespread damage across the state.
In an official order issued by the Department of Higher Education, Secretary (Education) Rakesh Kanwar said that the state is “causing very heavy rainfall in all areas in the last several days, causing widespread landslides, fall of trees, road blockage, power and drinking water supply blockage, and significant damage.”
The order warned that, due to the condition of weather conditions, “There is a high probability of recurrence of such incidents at many places across the state of Himachal Pradesh.”
It states that teachers and administrative staff are also exempted from participating in colleges and schools, but the heads of institutions should ensure that “teaching classes are conducted through online mode, whenever possible.” The heads of the institutions have been instructed to be cautious and ensure the security and safety of infrastructure, movable property and school records during the closed period.
Talking to reporters and later to ANI, Education Minister Rohit Thakur said that rains have disrupted normal lives not only in Himachal Pradesh but also in other parts of northern India.

At the teachers’ day celebrations, Thakur confirmed that the state level program will be attended by the Governor and the Chief Minister on 5 September. Regarding sports activities, Thakur stated that except for some districts, “14 sports tournaments were postponed due to weather conditions” and will later be reinforced based on local conditions.
The minister also talked about the effect of rain during the ongoing apple season.
“In Shimla district, from where I belong, the roads have suffered heavy losses. I have called a meeting related to the Apple season to make important decisions. So far, the cans of 1.35 million seconds have been marketed, which is about 50 percent of the crop,” he said.
Thakur said that the first phase of the deficit started in Mandi district in June-July, followed by Chamba, Kullu and now Shimla.
