More than 1,320 institutions have been affected due to heavy rains, cloudbursts, landslides and floods that have caused widespread damage across Himachal Pradesh during the 2025 monsoon season, officials said on Monday.

Chairing a review meeting with senior officials of the education department to assess the progress of various government schemes, recruitment process and restoration work across the state, Education Minister Rohit Thakur expressed concern over the damage caused to education infrastructure in the recent natural disasters – which led to the loss of approx. Rs 122 crore to the education department – and directed officials to expedite the repair works.
A statement issued here said he directed that the Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) fund should be utilized judiciously, schools which have suffered more than 75 per cent damage should be given priority and the utilization report should be submitted within five days, otherwise the unspent funds will be diverted to schools in immediate need.
Thakur also directed to immediately send all the sanctioned posts to the Himachal Pradesh State Selection Commission and Public Service Commission so that the recruitment process can be started without any delay and the vacancies in the schools can be filled at the earliest, the statement said.
The minister said that promoted postgraduate teachers (PGTs) who do not join their new posts within the specified time limit, their promotion will be canceled and the next eligible candidate will be allowed to serve.
He also reviewed the involvement of PGTs in Class IX and X and directed the Deputy Directors to identify and share success stories and innovative teaching practices in the districts.
Regarding the school inspection process, the Minister directed the Deputy Directors (Secondary, Elementary and Quality Education) to increase the inspection targets to further improve education standards and accountability.
Additionally, he reviewed the implementation of Dr. YS Parmar Vidyarthi Loan Scheme and directed the officials to ensure that all eligible students get education loans at one percent interest rate to pursue higher education.
The statement said that during the meeting, a presentation highlighting the achievements, reforms and initiatives of the Education Department from January 2023 till now was also given.
