Shimla/Dharamshala: Three students of a government college in Himachal Pradesh’s Dharamshala have been booked for ragging and intentionally causing hurt, while a professor has been booked for sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman who died on December 26, police said on Friday.
The student died during treatment at a hospital in Ludhiana on December 26 and a case was registered on Thursday following a complaint by the victim’s father.
In his complaint, the father of the deceased student alleged that his daughter was beaten by three senior students, Harshita, Aakriti and Komolika, on September 18, 2025, while a college professor, Ashok Kumar, performed obscene acts on her.
The complaint states that due to beating and harassment the student was admitted to the hospital and died during treatment. The father of the deceased woman alleged that after these incidents his daughter went under severe mental stress and fear, which led to a rapid decline in her health.
She said the complaint could not be filed earlier because her daughter was in shock and had to be admitted to hospital.
Police said a case has been registered under sections 75, 115, 3 of the BNS and section 3 of the Himachal Pradesh Educational Institutions Ragging Act 2009 and investigation is underway.
Kangra Superintendent of Police Ashok Ratan confirmed that the case has been registered and said that all the allegations are being investigated thoroughly. He said medical records, video evidence and statements of all concerned are being examined.
The case gained momentum after a video allegedly recorded by the student before her death went viral on social media. In the video, the victim has accused the professor of committing obscene acts, mental harassment and threatening her when she protested against his behaviour.
Police said initially a complaint was received through the Chief Minister Sankalp Seva helpline and an investigation team but the statement of the student could not be recorded as she was unwell at that time. Later the police recorded the statement of the victim’s father.
Preliminary police investigation has revealed that the deceased student had taken admission in the college in 2024. She reportedly faced ragging by some students and failed in her BA first year examination.
She stopped going to college after the results were declared in July 2025. On August 21, 2025, his name was struck off from the college rolls. She is believed to have gone to the college again in September for admission, where she was informed that she would be admitted to the second year only if she passed the revaluation, otherwise she would have to re-enrol in the first year.
Meanwhile, the accused professor has denied all the allegations against him. Some teachers have come out in support of the professor. He said that the student had studied under him in the previous academic session and was not his student in the current session.
ABVP state secretary Nancy Atal said the accused should be punished to ensure that such incidents do not happen in future.
