Soon after Chennai, holiday was declared in schools and colleges in Chengalpattu district too

Chennai and several parts of Tamil Nadu received widespread rainfall on Tuesday, forcing authorities to declare a holiday in Chennai schools on Wednesday.
Soon after Chennai, schools and colleges in Chengalpattu district and other parts of the state also declared holiday on Wednesday.
Tuesday’s heavy rains led to waterlogging in many low-lying areas, disrupting the daily life of residents and commuters. In Tambaram Sanatorium, a subway was flooded, with videos circulating on social media showing people wading through sewage-filled water.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), while most parts of Tamil Nadu are expected to receive less than 50 mm of rainfall, some areas witnessed significantly higher rainfall. According to the latest IMD report, Ramanathapuram recorded 149 mm rainfall, Nagapattinam 90 mm and parts of Chennai recorded around 63.5 mm rainfall.
The weather department has also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in the districts including Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore.
Similar conditions are expected in the Union Territories of Puducherry and Karaikal, with the possibility of thunderstorm and lightning at some places.
As a precautionary measure and to ensure public safety, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin visited parts of South Chennai today to inspect the ongoing infrastructure development aimed at improving drainage. This involves deepening and widening the canals, constructing covered concrete channels and desilting near the outlet of the estuary.
According to an official statement, during his visit, Udhayanidhi reviewed the work on Okkiyam Madhavi Canal – which is currently underway at a cost of Rs 27 crore and also inspected the desilting activities in Kannagi Nagar area.
