“I often say, ‘Life is all about positive – negativity does not exist. Stress is not an enemy. Instead, it conveys a message. The main thing is to practice what I call emotional hygiene,'” health and wellness coach Prachi Mehta tells Health Shots. This means it’s important to develop daily habits that help clear your mind and bring balance back into your life.

What are 5 ways you can reduce stress?

Here are five simple actions that can help reduce stress and anxiety, allowing you to take charge of your emotional well-being.

1. Connect with your family

Many people think that health is only about physical aspects, such as diet and exercise. However, the best way to recover is to spend quality time with family and loved ones. Our parents, children, and close friends give us stability and happiness, even though our relationships change over time. Each day, take some time to connect, share, and engage with your family members.

The best gift you can give your loved ones is your time. When you eat together, tell stories, or hug each other, you create special memories and support each other’s emotional well-being. As you relax, your emotions calm down and your body begins to heal. While medication can help with the illness, love and relationships can help prevent stress and anxiety.

2. Stop blaming, start learning

Do you ever feel stuck in a cycle of blame? This traps your mind in negativity, causing you to focus on finding mistakes instead of thinking about what to do next. Be it your parents, your boss, or yourself, being angry and blaming others only increases your stress.

Changing your mindset from blaming to learning can greatly improve your outlook on life. Instead of viewing failures as failures, consider them valuable lessons. Instead of viewing rejections as failures, view them as new paths forward. “Take mistakes as opportunities to learn and improve,” says the health and wellness coach. To take care of your emotional well-being, notice when you get stuck in blaming others. Ask yourself, “What is life teaching me?” This change in thinking not only makes you feel lighter but also helps you take control of your life.

3. Start forgiving

Forgiveness may be harder than it seems. Holding grudges and past hurts can weaken you emotionally. “Pride can keep you from saying ‘sorry,’ and your ego can make it hard to forgive,” the health coach shares. It is important to recognize that not letting go of these feelings keeps your anxiety alive.

Make clearing your emotions a daily habit. If you have hurt someone, apologize. If someone hurts you, practice forgiveness, even if they don’t ask for it. “Remember, the apology is for your peace of mind, not theirs,” the wellness coach says. The more you do this, the lighter and freer you will feel. This will bring more joy and less anxiety in your daily life.

4. Read more, see less

In a time when screens fill our lives, it’s easy to get stuck mindlessly scrolling or watching TV shows. “Although these activities may temporarily distract us, they don’t refresh our minds; they may even dull them,” the expert says. Over time, excessive screen time can affect our ability to focus, shape our values, and even affect our self-esteem through constant comparison with others.

Reading just 10-15 minutes a day can change your mindset. You can choose a motivational book, a spiritual text, or an inspiring biography. “Reading strengthens your thinking and helps you manage emotions more effectively,” the expert shares. It nourishes your mind, just as healthy food nourishes your body. While watching videos may provide brief entertainment, reading promotes growth and change.

5. Get outside and enjoy the sunshine

Many people avoid the sun because they are worried about tanning or skin damage. However, staying away from the sun can also lead to feelings of depression. A little sunlight can improve your mood, help you sleep better, and give you more energy.

Just 10 minutes of sunlight every day can improve your mood. Instead of staying indoors, go outside and enjoy the sunshine. Remember that life is about living freely, not in fear. Nature can be healing, and sunlight helps promote happiness and well-being.

Why is emotional hygiene important?

These exercises may seem simple, but their true power lies in consistency. “Just as brushing your teeth occasionally won’t prevent cavities, simply performing emotional hygiene activities when you’re stressed won’t prevent you from getting stressed,” the expert explains. Make these rituals a regular part of your daily routine rather than simply reacting to problems as they arise.
