The study, led by Mikael Bundgaard Sköting and Christian Bastrup Sondergaard of the Department of Neurosurgery at Copenhagen University Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark, notes that headspin can have significant side effects in breakdancers.
The study revealed headspin holes – a common head injury common to breakdancers. Studies have shown that it starts with hair loss and can later develop into a significant bulge – also known as the breakdance bulge. However, studies have shown that its side effects can be significant. The case report mentions a man in his early 30s who had been involved in breakdancing for two decades. A benign tumor more than an inch long had grown on his skull – which the study linked to years of headaches. The bulge caused discomfort and the man resorted to wearing a hat in public to hide it. He soon underwent surgery and had the bulge removed.

Dr. Christian Bastrup Sondergaard, co-author of the study, explained the development of scalp bumps due to headspin – he said the repeated friction between the skull and the floor combined with the pressure of headspin can lead to inflammation and scar tissue formation. This study serves as a warning to the breakdance community in particular. Dancers on online forums have begun sharing concerns, suggesting the use of padded beanies or gel pads to protect their scalp when performing headspins.
