Curfew was completely lifted in riot-hit Banbhulpura area of Haldwani on Tuesday morning, ending 12-day restrictions imposed following violent incidents following the demolition of an “illegal” madrassa.
As reported PTI The curfew was lifted at 5 am citing an official directive.
During the entire period the curfew was in force, the administration provided relaxations intermittently for different periods. Violence broke out on February 8 after the vandalism in the Madrasa in Banbhulpura. That day, locals threw stones and petrol bombs at municipal corporation personnel and police officers, forcing many personnel to take shelter in the police station. After this the mob set fire to the police station.

As reported by the police, six rioters lost their lives and more than 100 people, including police officers and members of the media, were injured during the violence.
Authorities have so far arrested 68 people in connection with the unrest. Also his property has been confiscated.
Earlier on Monday, ten people were arrested in connection with the violence in Haldwani.

Meanwhile, Nainital Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Prahlad Narayan Meena told reporters that with the recent arrests, the total number of persons detained in connection with the February 8 incident has now reached 68.
Those arrested on Monday included Arbaaz, who allegedly provided the material used in making the petrol bombs that were thrown at police officers and municipal corporation personnel during the riots.
SSP said that nine liters of petrol was seized from Arbaaz.
Abdul Malik, considered the main instigator, is absconding along with his son Abdul Moeed.
Malik was responsible for the construction of the madrasa and strongly opposed its demolition. His wife Safia Malik had filed a petition in the High Court seeking to stop the demolition, but her request for immediate relief was rejected. It is alleged that Malik had instigated violence in Banbhulpura on 8 February.
