According to Google’s latest report, the 2025 Global Anti-Scam Alliance ‘State Of Scams’ survey has revealed that 57% people have become victims of some form of online fraud in the last one year. Google has warned that fraudsters are now misusing AI tools, and it is very important to be alert to protect against them.
How fraudsters are using AI and how to stay safe
Online Job Scam- Nowadays many frauds start with fake job advertisements. Fraudsters create fake career websites and social media job posts in the name of real companies. Then they ask for money in the name of ‘registration’ or ‘interview processing’ fees and take personal information like Aadhaar, PAN or bank details.
Google’s advice:
The Scam Detection feature present in Gmail and Google Messages automatically detects such emails and messages. Apart from this, make sure to turn on Two-Step Verification for your security.
Fake Reviews and Extortion Scams – Many times fraudsters deliberately lower the rating of a business by posting a one-star review on its Google profile, and then ask for money from the owner saying ‘if you pay, they will remove the review.’
Google Maps now provides a direct option to report such extortion. Google advises not to contact the fraudsters, not to make any payment, but to take a screenshot and report it.
Fake AI Apps-
Fraudsters are taking advantage of the increasing popularity of AI. They create fake apps in the name of tools like ChatGPT or Gemini, which actually steal data from your phone or install malware.
Google’s advice:
Download apps only from official app stores and pay attention to the URL. The Enhanced Safe Browsing feature in Chrome warns you of dangerous links in real-time.
Cheating with free VPN apps
Many people become victims of fraudsters in the greed of free VPN. These fake VPN apps can steal your browsing details and bank information.
Google’s advice:
Keep Play Protect on on your phone, which automatically scans apps. Also, download VPN apps only from verified sources or apps with the VPN badge.
