Keep your brain young: Check out these expert-backed tips to fight brain aging and boost mental agility at any age
Like any other organ of the human body, our brain also needs care and attention to remain sharp and efficient, therefore, adopting habits that keep the brain active and vibrant is important to maintain cognitive health, enhance memory and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s or dementia. To ensure this, experts recommend adopting specific lifestyle choices that can significantly boost brain power, improve mental agility and promote long-term brain health.
Do you want a smarter brain?
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Srinivas M, consultant-neurologist at Sparsh Hospital, Yeshwantpur, explained, “Regular physical exercise, especially aerobic activities such as walking, swimming and cycling, play an important role in keeping the brain active and healthy. Exercises such as yoga or tai chi that challenge coordination and balance also enhance cognitive function. For young children, it is essential to create a brain-friendly environment.”
“Encouraging activities such as puzzles, memory games and creative play helps develop the brain. Limiting screen time is also important, as is developing a reading habit. In addition, good sleep and proper nutrition promote cognitive development. These practices, when started at an early age, lay the foundation for a lifetime of brain health,” he added.
Daily habits that promote brain health
According to Dr Vikram Hooded, Head of Department and Director and Clinical Head, Department of Interventional Neurology, Narayana Group, five key daily habits are recommended to keep your brain active and vibrant, especially in your 40s and 50s –
- First, get regular aerobic exercise, which increases blood flow and promotes brain plasticity.
- Second, prioritize quality sleep to support cognitive improvement.
- Third, stimulate your brain with challenging activities like solving puzzles or learning new skills.
- Fourth, eat a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and omega-3s, which promote brain health.
- Finally, practice mindfulness or meditation to reduce stress and increase mental clarity. Adopting these habits daily can greatly improve cognitive flexibility and protect against age-related decline. Even small, consistent changes can have a long-term impact on your brain’s vitality.
