New Delhi: The Central government on Wednesday appointed senior IAS officer Govind Mohan as the next Union Home Secretary.
According to a circular of the Department of Personnel and Training, Mohan will take over on August 22 after the completion of the five-year term of the incumbent Ajay Kumar Bhalla. The circular said Mohan will be the Officer on Special Duty in the ministry with immediate effect.
Mohan, a 1989 batch IAS officer of Sikkim cadre, has vast experience in administration and governance, having served in various capacities at both the Centre and state levels. Prior to this, he served as Secretary, Ministry of Culture, where he oversaw the successful ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ programme.
The appointment has been made at a time when the ministry is handling key issues
Mohan’s appointment comes at a crucial time when the Home Ministry is handling key issues including national security, law and order and internal security challenges.
The ministry has recently enacted three new laws – the Indian Justice Code, which modernises criminal justice to focus on victims’ rights; the Indian Civil Protection Code, which aims to enhance public safety and law enforcement; and the Indian Evidence Act, which describes the process of collecting evidence in the criminal justice system.
The office of the Home Secretary is second in seniority, just below the Cabinet Secretary.
This will not be Mohan’s first stint in the Home Ministry; he has previously served as Joint Secretary and Additional Secretary. He has also been Joint Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance.
