Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said here on Sunday that the government has considered the National Education Policy 2020 recommendations to add skill -based education.
The Union Education Minister said that there should be a change in the functioning of learning at the appropriate level and the National Education Policy 2020 was recommending it.
“We are at work to introduce the skill -based course of classes 11 and 12,” he said, at a program in Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.
In detail about the concept of including skill -based learning in the course, Pradhan stated that the earlier education system was focused and degree focused.
He said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi correctly stated that we need degrees and certification, but we need to enable students,” he said at Dakshinapatha Summit 2025 in IIT Madras.
“One of the primary recommendations of NEP 2020 is skill -based education,” he said. Pradhan said that his ministry was also working on class 6 to start skill -based learning. “Earlier, skill -based education was optional. Skill -based education was a selective. But after that Kaushal would be a formal part of education as a subject,” he said.
On creating new courses for classes 11 and 12, he said that the previous pattern of education focused on science, commerce and humanities. “Now, we are planning to introduce skills as well. For example, students can study topics such as mathematics, language, computer language writing – which is coding. Drone technology or artificial intelligence education. This is a new era,” he said.
“We have to train our youth, align our youth (with new course structure),” he said.
Referring to their earlier conversation with some IIT Madras students and some who have launched the startup, Pradhan said, “I am very grateful for Professor (IIT-M Director) Kamakoti and his team. They are jointly promoting and facilitating students with special talent”.
“There are students who are eligible for JEE Advanced, but somehow IIT cannot be found in Madras due to their sports activities. With the progressive policy recommended by the National Education Policy, a lot of talents from the fields of sports and music, are now including IITs in the topics of their choice,” Principal said.
Later, he shared some photos taken with students at the IIT Madras campus on social media.
Pradhan insisted on the fact that languages play an important role in communication, said that if an Indian company needs to tie-up with the Israel firm, it would have to learn the Hebrew language. “Anyone can learn English, or Mandarin. We can also learn Hebrew. But, I would like to learn Tamil language because Tamil Nadu is a lively thinking society.” He said.
On the occasion, the minister met the students who joined the IIT Madras after studying in the Tamil Nadu government schools under IITM for All Initiative.
He said, “The purpose of this program is to make IIT Madras accessible to all, especially for rural and deprived background students. These students are nominated in four years online BS data science program. This program is fulfilling aspirations and is making dreams come true,” he said.
Given that there are more than 1.75 lakh startups in the country, he said, “The new story is that these startup founding has become a job maker and not job seekers. IITs are competing with each other.”
He said that the National Educational Policy is a philosophical document to achieve the vision of the Center of India by 2020 2047 and he would have to implement each recommendation of NEP 2020 in the next two decades, he said.
