An Indian-origin man has been arrested in connection with the biggest gold heist in the history of Ottawa, Canada, at the Toronto airport after one of the suspects arrived in the country from India, India Today reported on Monday.
The arrest of 36-year-old Archit Grover comes almost a month after the arrest of nine persons involved in the sensational gold and cash heist from Toronto Pearson International Airport in April 2023, the report said.
Earlier in April 2023, an air cargo container – containing 6,600 bars of pure gold weighing 400 kg, worth over $20 million, was stolen from a secure storage facility using fake documents. The cargo container had arrived on a flight from Zurich, Switzerland to Canada. After landing at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, the cargo was unloaded and moved to a safe location, after which it was reported missing soon after.
“On April 17, 2023 at 3:56 pm a flight from Zurich, Switzerland landed at Pearson International Airport carrying 6600 bars of .9999% pure gold, weighing 400 kg, worth $20 million and CAD 2.5 million Value in foreign currency, it was unloaded and taken to a different location on the airport property,” India Today quoted Peel Regional Police as saying.
Peel Police Chief Nishan Duraiappa said, “This story is sensational and perhaps, we joke, it belongs in a Netflix series.”
During the investigation, investigators arrested and charged Grover at Pearson International Airport while he was boarding a flight from India.
According to PTI report, there was a Canada-wide arrest warrant against Grover for alleged theft of more than 5,000 Canadian dollars and conspiracy to commit an indictable criminal act. He is also being charged with firearms-related charges in the United States, the report said.
The report further states that Simran Preet Panesar, a 31-year-old Brampton man, a former Air Canada employee who was employed at the time of the theft, and Arsalan Choudhary, of no fixed address, are still missing and Canada-wide warrants are issued . is still issued for them.
The theft was reported to Canadian police on April 18, 2023, after the cargo arrived in Zurich, Switzerland.
