This winter, dress up warm and get away from the city and its polluted skies for a date with the biggest stars. Not the normal kind. This is the best month for stargazing, a time when the night sky offers the most unrestricted twinkling celestial spectacle you can imagine. Anyone can enjoy this hobby and it is increasingly being adopted by urban people who want to explore the sky and enjoy and learn something new, while also reducing stress. Astronomy camps are creating spaces for relaxation, away from work, under shimmering carpet. It involves people gathering around a bonfire, sharing stories, meeting other avid astronomers, watching slide shows and taking turns looking at the sky through telescopes.
If you’re new to this, here’s a list of things to keep in mind.
⦁ There is no alternative to dark skies, so go out of the city.
⦁ Ensure surrounding safety before settling in and always try to go in a group and never go alone.
⦁ Buy a star atlas separately from phone apps.
⦁ Don’t rush into buying binoculars, buy a good pair of binoculars first.
