For students wishing to begin studying abroad in Germany, the Munich Technical University has made an important announcement.
“From the winter semester 2024/25, the Technical University of Munich will charge tuition fees to international students from non-EEA countries who have recently enrolled on a bachelor’s or master’s degree course,” the official website of the Munich Technical University states.
While this update was announced for international students from non-EEA countries, the university confirmed that studying at TUM will remain free for students from Germany, the European Economic Area or equivalent states, as well as states with relevant agreements, and also for students who have achieved a higher education entrance qualification or bachelor’s degree in the German education system.
The Technical University of Munich is one of the top public universities in Munich, Germany, and is ranked 28th in the QS World University Rankings 2025. With one of the top public universities in the country introducing tuition fees for international students, it remains to be seen if other public universities will implement the same.
In a recent move, the German government has confirmed an increase in proof-of-funds requirements for the 2024/25 academic year. For the upcoming academic year, the required amount of funds will rise to €11,904 (US$12,875), representing an increase of approximately 6% from the previous level which was €11,208 (US$12,135), ICEF Monitor reported.
Tuition Fees Details:
According to the official website of the Technical University of Munich, tuition fees per semester will usually be 2,000 or 3,000 Euros for bachelor’s programs and 4,000 or 6,000 Euros for master’s programs.
According to the university, the tuition fees will be used to improve study conditions, such as further developing teaching, expanding counselling and support services, and improving student infrastructure.
The Technical University of Munich states that the introduction of tuition fees for international students will be done in a socially responsible manner, creating opportunities for discounts and scholarship programmes.
Students have many reasons for choosing Germany as their first choice for studying abroad. The main reasons include quality of education, comparatively low tuition fees, rich and diverse culture, etc.
With the introduction of tuition fees for international students from third countries and increased proof-of-funds requirements, students planning to study abroad still have a lot to look forward to.
