According to a recent report by Schengen News, Germany has granted 80,000 work visas in the first half of 2024. The Federal Foreign Office told the German Press Agency that these visas were granted for employment purposes between January and June 2024.
According to the news report, 40,000 work visas granted by Germany were issued to skilled workers, which is 3,000 more than the work visas granted during the same period of 2023. The increase in visa issuance by the country is closely related to the labor shortage in the country, especially for skilled workers.
The German Economic Institute (IW) in its analysis confirmed that Germany is facing a workforce shortage and said that 570,000 jobs will remain vacant in the country in 2023. According to the analysis, the workforce shortage is affecting the country’s economy.
Roles facing workforce shortages
According to Schengen News, sectors facing workforce shortages include a number of sectors such as transportation, manufacturing, construction, healthcare, engineering, and information technology.
According to another study by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), the number of labour shortages in the country is expected to grow further in the coming years. Citing this study, German Labour Minister Hubertus Heil had said in an earlier statement that the country will need seven million workers by 2035, reports Schengen News.
To tackle the workforce shortage in the country, officials will present the Indian skilled worker strategy at a German-Indian government consultation this autumn. Germany has also relaxed immigration rules to attract more skilled workers to the country, the report said.
