Constipation is one of the common stomach related problems that many people experience. The first instinct of many people is usually to address the problem with home remedies, ranging from increasing water intake to adding chia seeds to the diet and using over-the-counter solutions such as laxatives. However, sometimes constipation is more than a minor discomfort and may indicate an underlying health problem that requires medical attention.

HT Lifestyle caught up with Dr. Saksham Seth, Gastroenterologist, ISIC Multi-Specialty Hospital, who revealed his insights on why constipation is a serious medical concern.
Can constipation be an emergency?
Constipation is often dismissed as a minor digestive problem, but if ignored for a long time, it can turn into a medical emergency. Dr. Seth confirmed that although it is a very common problem, it affects about 57 percent of the Indian population.
He further explained that constipation can vary widely, ranging from mild, short-term cases to cases that may require medical attention.
5 red flags you need to know

Dr. Saksham Seth shares some warning signs that may indicate that your constipation is an emergency:
1Intractable stomach ache: Severe pain or pain that persists.
2Vomiting: Vomiting containing bile or stool.
3. constipation: Complete inability to pass stool or flatulence (gas), conditions that strongly indicate the presence of intestinal obstruction or ileus.
4. Hematochezia: presence of blood in stool
5. Dehydration: Evidence of extreme dehydration or general illness.
According to gastroenterologists, these symptoms can escalate and become ‘life threatening’ and need to be assessed immediately, especially in individuals with existing co-morbidities.
Dr. Seth emphasized that if constipation becomes stubborn, becomes frequent or starts affecting you then it is important to consult a specialist. Energy levels, appetite or overall well-being. He explained, “Apart from immediate emergency warning signs, going to a gastroenterology specialist is the most important step when symptoms have refractory characteristics or are associated with overall deterioration of the body.,
Gastroenterologists divide symptoms into these three categories:
- Refractory Symptoms: Refractory constipation persists for more than a week despite strict adherence to home remedies.
- laxative dependence: Apparently taking or feeling the need to take laxatives to keep bowel movements regular.
- Unexplained systemic symptoms: Cachexia (unexplained weight loss), generalized asthenia (weakness), or anorexia (loss of appetite) are all concurrent.
