It is common to hear that someone has permanently given up eating red meat in favor of chicken to take better care of their health. But this fear is not supported by science, claimed Dr Shubham Vatsya, gastroenterologist and hepatologist, Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, Delhi, with over 10 years of experience.
Taking to Instagram on December 24, Dr Vatsya said the notion that red meat causes heart attacks is “one of the biggest myths” in the country.
Benefits of eating red meat
Dr. Vatsya said that red meat is a nutrient-rich food source that provides high quality protein.
It is also rich in heme iron, zinc and vitamin B12, which especially helps menstruating women and athletes prevent anemia, low energy and muscle loss.
“Of all the plant-based sources of iron, heme iron is the most easily absorbed by our bodies. This is why it is extremely helpful in combating iron deficiency,” he explains.
How should we consume red meat?
Although avoiding red meat completely is not beneficial, we should be careful about the way we consume it.
Dr. Vatsya warned that eating excessive amounts of red meat daily, especially in processed forms such as sausage, bacon and salami, increases the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
He advised choosing lean and unprocessed cuts of red meat and limiting intake to a palm-sized portion once or twice a week. For a complete meal, meat should be combined with fiber.
