Born from Kuchipudi village of Andhra Pradesh, Kuchipudi dance, starting from the traditional devotion of temples, has today created its own identity across the world. Known for its energy, movement and expressions, this style brings Indian mythology to life. Its study and exposure has increased in America, Europe, Japan and Korea, while social media has popularized it among the new generation. The Culture Ministry has also started the process of inclusion in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
Telangana. Kuchipudi, included in the six major classical dance styles of India, has created its own identity across the world. This dance is named after Kuchipudi village in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, from where its journey started. According to dancer Sangeeta, Kuchipudi originated in temples. Earlier it was presented only by Brahmin men named Bhagavatulu.
This dance was a devotional form dedicated to God and was performed in temple premises only. Kuchipudi is known for its energy, speed, beautiful postures and expressions. The stories performed by the dancers are often taken from Indian mythological texts.

With time, this dance style has moved from temples to the stages of India and abroad. Today artists from all over the world are learning and performing it, due to which Indian culture is spreading. Kuchipudi has been made a part of the curriculum in more than 20 universities in America. Kuchipudi workshops in Europe have increased by 300% in the last five years. Special trends towards this dance style are emerging in Japan and Korea.

Social media platforms have given a new identity to Kuchipudi. More than 5 lakh videos are available under Kuchipudi on YouTube, while more than 10 lakh posts have been shared on Instagram with this hashtag.
Waiting to be included in UNESCO list
Famous dancer Dr. Anuradha Jonnalagadda says that the reason for the popularity of Kuchipudi is its flexible nature. This style, despite being traditional, easily incorporates modern subjects. The Ministry of Culture has started the process of including Kuchipudi in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, for this a special committee has been constituted.
