For the first time in nearly a century, western and northern parts of New York state will experience a total eclipse. The path of totality – a narrow stretch where the moon completely obscures the sun – passes through cities and towns including Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Jamestown.

Although the entire event will last several hours, the main spectacle – when day turns to night – is expected to last only four minutes. And yet it has taken years to build.

“It’s like our Super Bowl or a Taylor Swift concert,” said Patrick Kaler, chief executive officer of tourism agency Visit Buffalo Niagara. The tour group previously booked a trip to the area for this event following the partial solar eclipse in 2017. , He said.
Although the tourism boom will be brief, it is a welcome economic blow to the region, which has been hit hard by the loss of its industrial base. According to a report by the State Comptroller, the manufacturing sector in New York shrank by more than 60% between 1940 and 2009.

Buffalo will be one of the biggest beneficiaries. The state’s second-largest city is expecting more than one million visitors, according to Common Council member Joel P. Ferolato. This is the same as the entire population of Erie County.
More than half of the US cities falling in the path of the eclipse are fully booked for the night of April 7, and thousands of Airbnbs are on track for totality to reach 100% occupancy, according to data from data analytics company AirDNA. In the Adirondacks and the North Country, troopers are telling travelers to prepare for traffic jams of up to 12 hours, and heavy congestion is expected in other areas as well.
“I would bike to work,” said Tommy Cowan, managing partner of Buffalo bar Patrick’s Rooftop.

But despite the difficulties, people are upbeat, Cowan said. His bar, which overlooks the Erie Canal, has sold about 300 tickets for a solar eclipse viewing party. Every guest will receive a free pair of solar glasses and a menu with a recent add-on: eclipse cocktails.
Resurgence Brewing Company had a similar idea. The Buffalo-based brewing company released an eclipse-themed draft beer — time-stamped 3:18 p.m., the moment when Buffalo will experience totality — that sold out twice as fast as the average seasonal beer.
According to brewery president Jeff Ware, the company is also hosting an “Eclipse Bash”, which is expected to draw thousands of people. Among the guests will be Andy Parker, a local meteorologist, who will lead a discussion about the eclipse.
This rare phenomenon has also inspired some less pleasant events. Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz ordered businesses closed during the eclipse, citing traffic concerns. State lawmakers are requesting a day off, even though the budget deal has already been delayed by several days. And a half-dozen inmates are suing after 23 state prisons announced plans to lock inmates during the eclipse, saying the eclipse has religious significance.
Amidst the chaos, the only certainty is that no one wants to miss out. Following are some selected events to view the eclipse:
NASA in Niagara Falls
There’s no party like a NASA party – well, at least not one celebrating a solar eclipse. The U.S. space agency will take over Niagara Falls State Park until Monday — “See you on the dark side of the moon,” the park’s website says in reference to Pink Floyd — that will offer a series of stellaria-related activities, featuring astronauts and Scientist-led programming, space-themed musical performances as well as planetarium shows will also be perfectly situated to view the fireworks display hosted by Rochester-based grocery chain Wegmans at 8:30 p.m.
Lake Erie Wine Country
Apparently, this astronomical phenomenon pairs perfectly with a glass of wine. Lake Erie Wine Country, a group of 21 wineries on the shore of the Great Lakes, is hosting a four-day dining and wine tasting event that will culminate in an event for ticket holders only to view the spectacle. The wine region extends for 50 miles (80 kilometers) and consists of approximately 30,000 acres of vineyards along the shores of Lake Erie.
Syracuse Mets
Baseball fans can stare at something other than their favorite players in the park’s first total eclipse at Syracuse’s NBT Bank Stadium. The first 10,000 people to enter through gates opening at 2 p.m. will receive complimentary eclipse glasses. After the showdown, fans can stay to watch the Syracuse Mets take on the Worcester Red Sox.
vintage train
The A&A Railroad, located about an hour from Rochester, is offering a unique train ride that’s sure to feel as magical as boarding the Polar Express. The rare World War II-era diesel train will depart Arcade Depot at 2pm before terminating at Currier Station in time for the overall viewing. Visitors are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets for comfortable viewing.
Adirondacks Hike
Ausable Chasm, the “Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks,” features five miles of winding walking trails that offer scenic views of roaring waterfalls and sandstone canyons. Located right in the middle of the path of totality, the hiking grounds will feature “solar flats” viewing areas for those who want to watch the event amid nature. The admission cost of $19.95 includes parking, access to facilities, refreshments and viewing. Glasses included.
skydiving over niagara falls
If plunging into pitch darkness at noon doesn’t sound thrilling enough, Skydive The Falls is offering adrenaline junkies the chance to jump from the sky at the same time. Tandem Skydiving Center is offering “holistic jumps” from the highest altitude available in Western New York (up to 13,500 feet) that will coincide, perfectly, with the moment the world goes black.
