Tata Motors was earlier named Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company Limited. The company was established in 1954 to manufacture commercial vehicles. In 1998, on the initiative of Ratan Tata, the company entered the passenger vehicle segment.
New Delhi. Ratan Tata, who showed a new path not only to the Tata Group but also to the entire Indian industry, is no longer with us. On Wednesday, he breathed his last at the age of 86 at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. Ratan Tata not only changed the fortunes of the group company Tata Motors, but also gave a new identity to the Indian automobile industry across the world. From Indica to Nano to the acquisition of Jaguar-Land Rover, Tata Motors under the leadership of Ratan Tata set new standards in the Indian automobile industry. His visionary leadership and bold decisions helped make Tata Motors one of the most important automobile companies in the world.
Tata Motors, formerly known as Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company Limited (TELCO), manufactured commercial vehicles since 1954. In 1998, under the leadership of Ratan Tata, the company made a car named ‘Indica’ for the first time. The specialty of Indica was that it was a car of the size of Maruti Zen, with a cabin as big as the Ambassador and with low fuel consumption like the Maruti 800. As soon as the booking of Indica started, more than 1,00,000 people booked it.

initial loss
Indica was a purely Indian car. Although the initial batch had quality problems and Tata Motors suffered a loss of Rs 500 crore in 2001, the Indica emerged as a bestseller. This was Tata Motors’ true entry into the car industry. The Indica changed the direction of the company and established it as a serious car manufacturer. Tata Motors manufactured the Indica at a time when India did not have a solid infrastructure to produce its own hatchbacks.
Ratan Tata had designed this car keeping in mind the needs of Indian customers. It not only had more space, more fuel efficiency but its design was also attractive. It was the first car to combine a hatchback with a diesel engine, making it a more affordable and practical option for Indian families. 3800 components, more than 700 dies and 4000 fixtures of this car were designed in Pune. Tata Motors introduced Indica V2 by correcting the shortcomings of Indica. This model won back the trust of customers.
Mirror shown to Ford
Initially incurring losses in the car division, in 1999 Ratan Tata and his team approached Ford and offered to buy the car division of Tata Motors. Ford reacted very coldly to this. One officer even said that if you do not know how to make cars, then why did you enter this business. Ratan Tata took this sarcasm to heart and decided to establish Tata Motors. He demonstrated this by doing also.
Nine years later, in 2008, Ratan Tata acquired Jaguar and Land Rover from the same Ford for $2.3 billion. This acquisition was not just a business move, but also a response to the insult from Ford, which established Tata Motors on the global stage.
tata nano
Ratan Tata had a dream in 2003—to build an affordable and safe car for India’s middle class. The result of this dream was “Tata Nano”, which was launched in 2009. Nano has been in the news all over the world due to its affordable price and innovation. Tata Motors sold 2.75 lakh Nano units till 2018. Tata stopped production of Nano in 2018 due to declining sales.
