Ever since humans first started looking up at the skies, thousands of questions about space, the universe, and galaxies have remained unanswered. The quest to find answers about the formation of the universe and understand its biggest mystery introduced humans to the wonders of space, including interacting galaxies, nebulae, moons, planets, and black holes. Space agencies like NASA keep sharing mesmerizing images from space for us to understand the universe better.
The Carina Nebula contains millions of stars. This image was created using data from the NASA Hubble Telescope. Nebulae are made of dust and gases that can be pulled together by gravity into clumps. Eventually, a clump becomes so large that it collapses under gravity, heating up the material at its center.
The image, taken with NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope, shows particles emitted by stars, called stellar winds, as well as light produced by the star itself, can push surrounding material outward, creating the bubble’s distinct perimeter. Based on what astronomers know about them and other cosmic bubbles, the bubbles are estimated to be 10 to 30 light-years in diameter.
NASA’s warm color image shows the true essence of the spiral galaxy pair. This image is a simultaneous combination of two different images of the same spiral galaxy captured by the NASA Webb and NASA Hubble telescopes.
The center of the galaxy is approximately centered and the arms appear to rotate counterclockwise. The structure resembles the cross section of a nautilus shell.
This image shows a medium-sized solar flare emanating from the Sun. The solar flare was at its peak on June 22, 2015. This image was taken by NASA’s Goddard Solar Dynamics Observatory, which continuously monitors the Sun.
This stellar image of a nova called GK Persei is a perfect example of a “classical nova,” an outburst of mass caused by a thermonuclear explosion on the dense surface of a white dwarf star. The image was provided by NASA’s Chandra X-Ray Observatory. This often happens when a white dwarf and a larger star — often a red giant — orbit each other. Together, they become a binary star system.
The Arched Nebula is located about 4,000 light-years from Earth. The nebula is formed from material ejected from a dying Sun-like star as it enters its white dwarf phase of evolution. Dense streaks of material extend backward from the nebula’s central star, creating the arched shape.
