If you are wondering how to take care of your skin amid the festive hustle and bustle, we have some holistic tips on how to take good care of your skin from Dr. Karuna Malhotra, beauty therapist and cosmetologist, founder of Cosmetic Skin & Homeo Clinic, based in New Delhi.
Create a base for a natural glow
According to Dr. Malhotra, “Healthy, hydrated skin is the best canvas for festive makeup.” Focus on gentle exfoliation twice a week to remove dead skin and unclog pores. After this apply nourishing face mask. Natural alternatives like honey and aloe vera can work wonders.
“Whether you are decorating indoors or attending a puja during the day, don’t forget to apply your sunscreen,” she advises. Pollution and indoor light can also damage the skin layer. A lightweight moisturizer and hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid will keep your skin supple and glowing.
Focus on removing your makeup every night before sleeping. “Twice cleansing is recommended, first with micellar water or an oil-based cleanser and then with a mild face wash, which ensures that your skin doesn’t feel dry or chapped,” says Dr. Malhotra.
Hair care during festive rush
Constant exposure to styling tools, hair spray and pollution during Diwali can cause hair to become dry and frizzy. Dr Malhotra says nutrition is key: “A warm oil massage with coconut or almond oil twice a week strengthens the roots and restores shine”.
If you style your hair frequently, make sure you don’t forget to use heat protectant spray and limit heat exposure. “You can also try simple traditional hairstyles that don’t require excessive products or heat – it gives a festive yet healthy look,” she says.
Dr. Malhotra also recommends using a clarifying shampoo to remove product build-up after the festivities, followed by a deep-conditioning hair mask. She emphasizes that hair health also reflects your internal health, so hydration and nutrition are equally important.
Caution in eating and balance in celebration
The festive and wedding season is incomplete without sweets and rich food, but moderation is the key. “Enjoy your meals but balance them with fibre-rich fruits, salads and adequate water intake,” says Dr Malhotra. Excessive sugar and fried snacks can cause acne and inflammation. She suggests starting your day with a detox drink – warm water with lemon or amla juice – to boost digestion and metabolism.
To manage energy levels, she recommends herbal tea, coconut water or buttermilk instead of sugary sodas. “When your body feels light, it is reflected on your skin as a natural glow,” she explains.
Detox after the festive season: Recharge from the inside out
After days of celebrations, fireworks and sleepless nights, the skin and body crave repair. Dr. Malhotra suggests a “detox week” after Diwali. “Switch to a cleaner diet, prioritize sleep, and use skin-soothing products containing rose water or cucumber,” she says.
For hair, she recommends a nourishing hair mask and scalp detox using a blend of aloe vera gel and a few drops of tea tree oil to remove residue and soothe irritation.
Dr. Malhotra also advises on your mental health and hence, she recommends taking out time for light yoga or a walk in the fresh air. “It’s not just the physical detox but also the mental rejuvenation that really restores your festive glow,” she says.
Festive beauty isn’t about overloading your skin or hair with products — it’s about balance, nourishment, and self-care. “When you feel good from within, your natural glow becomes your best makeup,” concludes Dr. Malhotra.
