The world’s leading countries have internalized an important truth: the most transformative innovations are dual-use technologies that serve both civilian life and strategic needs. The Internet, GPS, and drones were all born from frontier research programs that later revolutionized entire industries and economies. These successes didn’t just strengthen nations; They created trillion-dollar markets and shaped global leadership.
India’s next wave of development should emerge from this model. Dual-use deep technologies – built on advanced science and designed to work across sectors – are the foundation of economic strength, resilience and self-reliance.
Imagine reimagined AI-powered surveillance systems for urban security and disaster response. Or a high-precision sensor network originally built for border surveillance, used to monitor crops, pollution or wildfires. This kind of cross-pollination is what drives innovation – and this has been lacking in India so far.
Countries like Israel and the United States have shown how aligning government, education, and private capital around deep science can transform economies. His startups didn’t chase quick exits or valuations — they created technologies that redefined entire industries and national capabilities.
To replicate that success, India will have to fund conviction, not convenience. Deeptech ventures require patient, long-term investment – not rapid changes in consumer markets, but steady faith in building what others can’t. Without this trust, India risks losing its brightest innovators to countries that finance ambition more than urgency.
India has immense opportunities – but its window is narrow. The next global superpowers will not be those who consume technology the fastest, but rather those who create the technologies on which the world depends.
If India wants to lead in the next decade, it will have to build outward from the laboratory – nurturing a deeptech ecosystem that integrates defence, education and enterprise innovation.
India’s DeepTech decade will be defined by how boldly we invest in ideas that don’t just pay off tomorrow but shape what’s possible for generations. Dual-use technology will yield sustainable leadership that advances both civic progress and strategic strength.
