Following the announcement of closure of several MTV music channels in Europe, former VJs of MTV India, including Malaika Arora, Sophie Choudry and Nikhil Chinapa, shared their thoughts on social media. While Malaika and Sophie expressed sadness at the news, Nikhil offered a pragmatic stance, saying that MTV’s music programming has largely faded in recent years, and also confirmed that the news had nothing to do with MTV’s closure in India.

For many former VJs of India, this news feels like the end of an era. “Nobody can deny the impact that MTV has made over the decades,” Malaika Arora shared on social media. Nikhil Chinapa said, “It’s sad in terms of nostalgia but with the excitement of streaming, on-demand technology, etc., it was inevitable.”
Fans immediately reacted online, flooding Xx (formerly Twitter) with nostalgic messages and memes.
Paramount Global’s announcement earlier this week caused a stir on social media. Many users immediately went nostalgic and started remembering afternoons spent watching MTV after school or college, watching the latest pop hits and music videos. Channels such as MTV 80s, MTV Music, Club MTV, MTV 90s and MTV Live will stop broadcasting in England by December 31, 2025. While the move will initially affect the United Kingdom and Ireland, other European countries including Poland, France, Germany and Austria, as well as Australia and Brazil, could face similar closures in the near future.
However, according to reports, MTV will continue to air HD reality shows, marking a clear shift away from the brand’s music-centric roots. The decision comes amid changing audience habits, as platforms like YouTube, TikTok and Spotify dominate music consumption. It also follows Paramount Global’s recent merger with Skydance Media, part of a $500 million global cost-cutting initiative.
Although they won’t be taking off in India just yet, this news is a reminder of MTV’s global impact and the indelible mark it has left on a generation of music lovers and VJs.
