In a shock to the Aam Aadmi Party ahead of the MCD by-elections, senior leader and two-time former MLA Rajesh Gupta joined the BJP on Saturday. Gupta, who had also served as AAP’s national spokesperson and headed its Karnataka unit, joined the BJP in the presence of Delhi state president Virendra Sachdeva.
A statement issued by the Delhi BJP said Sachdeva welcomed Gupta into the BJP by giving him the party stole.
The Delhi BJP president said AAP leaders are now counting the shortcomings and problems in Delhi that had arisen during his party’s 12-year rule, and yet they are questioning the eight-month-old BJP government.
Gupta alleged that the “biggest reason” behind the “downfall” of AAP and its leader Arvind Kejriwal was the “use and throw” treatment of workers.
According to the statement, “While joining BJP, Rajesh Gupta became emotional remembering his contribution to AAP, the ridicule he received in return and the behavior of AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal. He even started crying bitterly.”
When AAP was founded, many prominent persons enthusiastically joined hands with Arvind Kejriwal, but he “betrayed everyone”, and one by one everyone decided to abandon him, Gupta said in the statement.
“Unfortunately, today I have also joined that list,” he said.
He claimed that in Ashok Vihar ward, AAP has given by-election ticket to a person to whom the party itself has issued a notice.
He further said, ‘Despite my years of integrity, honesty and loyalty, when I raised my concerns, the party president was not even ready to talk to me. This is the situation when the party is neither in power in the Delhi government nor in the MCD.
Gupta claimed that the ‘use and throw’ treatment of workers is the biggest reason for the downfall of Arvind Kejriwal and AAP.
The Delhi BJP chief said that Rajesh Gupta had created a distinct identity for himself as a responsible MLA, but Arvind Kejriwal failed to give importance to that identity. He said that a detailed investigation has been demanded into the manner in which Kejriwal is missing from Delhi after losing the assembly elections and the circumstances under which he left Delhi.
Sachdeva said Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia are completely missing, with AAP leaders Atishi and Gopal Rai making only “special presence” in Delhi, referring to the campaign for the Delhi Municipal Corporation by-elections.
