In an Instagram video posted on October 4, the fitness coach said, “Being a foodie is not a reason not to be fit because it is very possible to be a foodie and stay fit. You just have to follow these four things.”
1. Control the quantity of food
Raj emphasizes the importance of careful portion control when enjoying different foods — reminding that every new dish doesn’t necessarily lead to overeating or indulgence. He explains, “A foodie is a person who enjoys food. A gourmet is a person who enjoys eating to excess. So, what are you, a foodie or a gourmet? Make up your mind. If you are a foodie, you need to learn to enjoy food without overdoing it.”
2. Control frequency
Your desire to discover and indulge in new foods must be balanced – it’s okay to indulge occasionally, but turning it into a daily habit may hinder your fitness goals. Raj explains, “How often are you doing these things? Trying new foods, enjoying fun foods. It doesn’t have to be very rare. You can do it a few times a week, but you need some type of regulation. It can’t be an everyday thing.”
3. Exercise is important
Fitness trainers explain that when you consume large amounts of food, your body stores extra energy that must be metabolized efficiently. That’s why regular movement and exercise — even something as simple as walking — is essential to help your body use that energy consistently. “That’s where walking and exercise come in, especially strength training, because strength training builds your engine, increases your basal metabolic rate and helps you burn calories and stay in shape longer,” explains Raj.
4. Monitor body metrics
According to Raj, it’s important to monitor certain metrics of your body as it helps you recognize when things are getting out of control, so you can get back on track. He suggests, “It could be your body weight, it could be your body composition, it could be your cholesterol, it could be your blood sugar, whatever it is that you’re concerned about, but make sure you monitor these metrics because when you monitor them, you realize when things are going a little bit off and you can get yourself back on track.”
