Fighter movie review: Bollywood’s love for telling India-Pakistan stories on the big screen knows no bounds. And the war drama subgenre is preferred when the director wants to combine it with a greater dose of adrenaline and thrill. Siddharth Anand’s latest visual spectacle Fighter has only raised the stakes in style, and mostly for the right reasons. Also read: Fighter review and release live updates
Touted as India’s first aerial action film, starring Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone playing top combat aviators, Fighter creates an intense experience and becomes equally impressive. No, it’s flawless, but honestly, the near-perfect script keeps you invested and engaged to such an extent that you barely focus on the flaws.
Fighter’s story
Haven’t seen the trailer of Fighter, but after the buzz on social media, I went into Fighter thinking there would be great chemistry between the lead actors, but I was pleasantly surprised. A tribute to the tireless and unwavering courage of the Indian Air Force (IAF), Fighter does not get distracted or distracted, and remains committed to its sole objective – offering a visually stunning experience and giving an adrenaline rush that lasts for quite a long time. Stays till.
Although it is never explicitly stated which exact period the film is based on, there are ample and more references to the deadliest terrorist attack on the Indian Air Force in Pulwama and the cross-border attack by India in Balakot. The film begins with the Commanding Office Rakesh Jai Singh aka Rocky (Anil Kapoor) forming a quick reaction team consisting of top AIF fighter pilots – Squadron Leader Shamsher Pathania aka Patty (Hrithik), Squadron Leader Minal Rathore aka Minnie (Deepika) – to form a special team unit called Air Dragons. Together they display a great camaraderie, brotherhood and have many fun moments bonding with each other as well as fighting the enemies.
Co-written by Anand and Ramon Chib, the story has a great mix of action, emotion, patriotism, music, comedy and a little romance too. However, I wish that just as Anand has paid attention to small details in terms of action and execution, he would have given more thought to the storytelling. The plot is interesting yet predictable and doesn’t leave you feeling surprised at any big reveals. The dialogues of Hussain Dalal and Abbas Dalal are so average that it actually takes away the impact it has on the story. I mean, we have heard those clichéd lines – ‘The time has come to tell Pakistan who is the father’ or ‘The enemy will not attack strategically’ – again and again, and they no longer excite.
Great performance by almost everyone
Despite the story barely managing to hold on, it’s Chibb’s smooth screenplay that keeps you on the edge of your seat while watching that spectacular aerial battle. Here, I would like to mention the cinematography of Sachith Paulos who gets full credit for making Fighter a visual treat and a brilliantly extraordinary film. The film features some exceptionally gorgeous locations and snow-clad mountain ranges which makes the whole experience even more spectacular. Having said that, the Fighter does not suffer from speed issues. After a super engaging first half that is well timed, the film falters in the second half with stretches that are forced just to cover the desired runtime. Only in the last 20 minutes and then during the climax does the film pick up pace and move towards a thrilling ending.
What’s definitely worth praising about Fighter is the stellar performances from almost everyone. Hrithik is a sight for sore eyes. With his unmatched swag, chiseled body and bling, he nails every frame with ease. Be it doing all the aerial combat, wearing the uniform or walking stylishly on the big screen, Hrithik is the strongest link in the fighter. Don’t miss the scuffle between him and a terrorist on Pak land, which is one of the most well-filmed scenes.
Talking about Deepika, she once again delivers a solid performance with ease. After watching her do some high-octane action in last year’s ‘Pathan’, I can easily say that she has taken her acting up a notch in Fighter and you won’t be complaining if it’s just her glamorous avatar. Not what is exposed here. As far as their onscreen chemistry is concerned, the dance sequences, flying and some emotional scenes will leave you in awe.
Anil Kapoor once again showed why he can give a tough competition to the youth. As a strict and considerate officer, he embodies those qualities very well in his body language.

Fighter is a complete entertainer
Karan Singh Grover as Squadron Leader Sartaj Taj Gill aka Taj and Akshay Oberoi as Squadron Leader Bashir Khan aka Bash are brilliant in their respective roles, and it’s good to see that their characters are important to the story , and not just the supporting cast. , Also, keep an eye out for heart-touching cameos by Sharib Hashmi, Ashutosh Rana and Sanjeeda Shaikh, who bring a smile to your face in some of their scenes.
On the other hand, Rishabh Sahni as Azhar Akhtar, the head of terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed, brings freshness to the screen with a strong introduction scene, but sadly, his character as the main antagonist leaves zero impact. He’s probably one of the weakest negative portrayals in a war drama I’ve seen in a long time. There’s nothing menacing or unnerving about him other than that red eye, which after a point looks like he’s been punched hard during a fight.
Fighter is a thoroughly entertaining film that engages and excites in equal measure. It is full of patriotism but it never resorts to chest-thumping slogans like Jai Hind or Hindustan Zindabad. The scene where Hrithik makes reference to IOP (Indian Occupied Pakistan) in the climax definitely demands loud cheers, and proves that Hindi films know best how to show love for their country. Check out Fighter for a pure value for money experience, good-looking displays and some gravity-defying aerial action that won’t give you a headache but will leave you with a sense of pride.
