Female robot astronaut ‘Vyommitra’ will fly into space ahead of ISRO’s ambitious Gaganyaan mission, which will be India’s first manned space flight to carry Indian astronauts to space.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh made this announcement while talking to media persons in Delhi on Sunday.
“The uncrewed “Vyommitra” mission is scheduled for the third quarter of this year, while the manned mission “Gaganyaan” is scheduled to be launched next year, i.e. in 2025,” Singh said.
He explained that Vyommitra is a name made up of two Sanskrit words, “Vyom” (meaning space) and “Mitra” (meaning friend).
This female robotic astronaut module is equipped with the ability to monitor parameters, issue alerts and perform life support operations. It can perform tasks like conducting six panels and answering questions,” the minister said.
Singh further explained that the ‘Vyommitra’ astronaut has been designed in such a way that it can simulate human actions in the space environment and interact with life support systems.
He said that before the launch of India’s first manned space flight ‘Gaganyaan’, the first test vehicle Udan TV D1 was completed on October 21 last year.
Its purpose was to qualify the crew escape system and parachute system. Human rating of the launch vehicle has been completed. All propulsion stages are capable. Singh said, all preparations have been done.
Quoting the Space Ministry, he said that the unmanned robotic flight ‘Vyommitra’ will be launched this year, while ‘Gaganyaan’ will be launched next year.
The Gaganyaan project envisages demonstrating human space capabilities by launching a crew of astronauts into a 400 km orbit and then landing these astronauts in Indian waters and returning them safely to Earth.
In addition to demonstration and evaluation of test vehicle subsystems, other objectives for the TV-D1 launch included flight demonstration and evaluation of various separation systems, crew module characteristics, including crew escape systems; and deceleration system performance and recovery at high altitude.
