LOS ANGELES (AP) — Fans flocked to an early screening of the absurdist sci-fi comedy “Bugonia” in Los Angeles Monday night with a strange stipulation – only bald people are allowed into the theater.
The film’s distributor, Focus Features, challenged viewers to shave their heads while watching “Bugonia” starring Oscar-winning actor Emma Stone.
Stone and Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos gained a powerful fan base after teaming up for the Oscar-nominated films “Poor Things” and “The Favourite.”
“Bugonia” will be released in select theaters on Friday and then across the US on October 31.
In “Bugonia,” Stone plays a powerful pharmaceutical CEO named Michelle Fuller who is abducted by two conspiracy theorist-cousins who are convinced she is an alien — so much so, they shaved her head.
With a barber in the lobby, fans like Sam Sherman of Los Angeles stepped up to get their buzz cuts to gain entry to the screening.
“I was already thinking about shaving my head,” Sherman said.
He said, “I saw a post about it and I was like, this is the perfect excuse because I want to see ‘Bugonia’ anyway and I get to see it two weeks early or whatever, and then I get a free haircut and a free movie. It’s hard to say no to that.”
Matthew Lopez, 29, of Los Angeles thought the bald screening was a good idea, inspired by Stone’s shaved head.
“It almost feels like a sinking feeling, like, okay, ‘I did this, she did this.’ I can relate to the story a bit,” he said.
For Richard Chong, 36, it was a chance to please his friends and family.
Chong said, “I like the director. I think he’s really cool, very funny and my friends don’t like my bowl cut, so it’s for them, for my wife too, she really hates it.”
