From prioritising protein in the diet to minimising alcohol consumption, here are four golden rules to follow when going on a vacation.

With the festive season around the corner, it’s time for many to start planning their annual trips. While some people prefer to stay at home and enjoy the festivities, some use the festive holidays to jet off to a holiday destination. While a vacation can help refresh the mind and body, it is equally important that we keep an eye on our plate and our glass to ensure we don’t harm the body. Sometimes it’s important to break the rules – take a break from your diet program and enjoy the foods we love, but we must be careful not to overdo it. We must remember that the goal of taking a vacation is to come back home rested and healthy. Nutritionist Shayla Cadogan, RD, in a recent article shared four golden rules that can help us manage indulgence during the holidays.

Reduce your alcohol intake:

When we think of a vacation, we imagine ourselves holding a glass of margarita to sip by the sea. However, we must remember, no alcohol, in any quantity, can do us any good. When we mix it with soda or sweetened juices, we add more calories to the body. It is helpful if we can minimize our alcohol intake.

Keep a neutral mindset:

Often, we look at holidays as a way to take a break from our routine – to the extent that we think we can eat whatever we want. This mindset can lead us to skip breakfast, have a light lunch and eat a heavy dinner. This can affect the body.

Leave the guilt at home:

When we return from a vacation, we may find ourselves with a few extra pounds on our plate. But the guilt of gaining weight can overwhelm us and deter us from our health and fitness journey. Instead, we should look at vacation as a much-needed break from the routine, allowing us to return with a healthier mind and body.

Prioritize Protein:

Often, we don’t have a lot of food options during the holidays. But when we prioritize our protein intake, it helps us stay full for longer and reduces the risk of overeating.
