New Delhi. India is an emerging market for electric cars. This is the reason why the world’s big electric car manufacturing companies like Tesla and Ford want to sell their electric cars in the country. However, Tesla has not yet been able to implement its plan to set up a plant in India. Meanwhile, VinFast EV, a Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturing company, has also started setting up a plant in India. The company is starting construction of a 400-acre plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The company has also talked about developing dealerships for its electric cars in the country.
Vinfast will invest approximately Rs 4,144 crore in its plants in India in the next five years. The company’s plant will have the capacity to produce 1.5 lakh vehicles annually. The company says that the EV manufacturing plant will create employment opportunities for 3,000 to 3,500 people in the state.
Company started in 2017
As a new player in the automotive industry, VinFast officially started operations in Vietnam in 2017. Initially, the EV manufacturer introduced scooters and models based on BMW cars. In 2021, Vinfast expanded its offering in Vietnam by launching three electric cars, two new electric scooters and an electric bus.
The following year, Vinfast began expanding its global presence by setting up showrooms in the US, Europe and Canada. VinFast currently sells models like the VF8 and VF9 SUVs in the US and the VF6 and VF7 SUVs in Canada.
These cars will be launched in India
Vinfast has started setting up plants in India. However, it may take some time for the production of electric cars to start. If reports are to be believed, the company may start selling electric cars in India from 2025. Initially, the company will bring completely built models (CBU) to India, after which completely knocked-down (CKD) units will be introduced in India by 2026. After this, locally made models will be introduced. The first few models could be SUVs and crossovers like VinFast VF7 and VinFast VF6.
