- Preparing the Bed: Level the ground and spread a 2 meter wide polythene sheet on it. You can keep its length according to your place.
- Dung and Earthworms: Apply a layer of cow dung on the sheet. Scatter earthworms over it and again add a layer of cow dung. Keep in mind that the height of the dung heap should not be more than 1.5 feet.
- Care: Cover the entire bed with paddy straw or sack. To maintain moisture in the cow dung, keep spraying water from time to time. Keep in mind that no pesticide is used on it and protect the bed from snakes and rats.
In about 60 days (2 months) the earthworms will convert the entire dung into high quality compost. After this, the earthworms are separated by filtering the manure.

You can start vermi compost business with a very low investment by investing Rs 50,000. In this, the maximum expenditure is on earthworms. Earthworms are available for around Rs 1000 per kg. But the special thing is that earthworms grow very fast and they double in number in about three months. Therefore, if you buy earthworms once and expand your business further, you will not need to buy earthworms. Apart from earthworms, you will also have to buy cow dung, plastic seat and paddy straw. Since these things are not very expensive, you will not have to spend much on them.
