Gold and other precious metals are gradually leaking into the upper layers from the core of the Earth. A new study suggests that they are reaching the surface during the formation of a volcanic island like Hawaii.
Researchers have studied air rocks formed by growing magma plums and have indicated heavy metals. This supports the idea that the Earth’s core cannot be completely closed. This can occur by leaking into the rocky mantle.
Experts had already admitted that almost all the gold of the earth is deep into the melted core. It was built about 4.5 billion years ago during the formation of early planets. However, this research suggests that small amounts can reach the surface.
Conclusions stimulate scientists, because, over time, more gold and rare elements can move beyond the deep interior of the Earth. This discovery hopes that new sources of gold in the future can gradually be formed near volcanic regions.
The core of the Earth has two layers: a solid internal core iron and nickel core and a liquid outer core of melted metal. The solid core is about 70% of the moon size. The outer core extends 1,800 miles below the surface.
“About 40 years ago, people first came up with the principle that the core mental is losing some materials, but the indications we had so far were really vague,” CNN said that Geochemist Nills said.
“Now, in my opinion, we have the first very strong proof that some core is actually ending in mental,” Melling said.
Melling and his team have studied volcanic rocks from Hawaii to understand how the Earth’s core and mental interact. They crushed half a kilo of basalt rock into powder, melted it with chemicals and turned it into a liquid.
From this, he extracted rare elements from the platinum group, focusing on ruthenium. This silver-gray metal, rare in the form of gold, is mostly found in the core of the Earth, not in the mental.
The process may take 4.5 billion years
Melling suggests that small amounts of gold may gradually be leaked from the Earth’s core. This process can explain how the Earth’s gold supply is being renewed.
“It is a very interesting idea that, although this process is small and if you just look at an island, there is zero effect, if you scale it for 4.5 billion years, it may be that it replaces the Earth’s structure,” he said.
