Samantha Ruth Prabhu addressed the issue of insulin resistance on her recent health podcast. Speaking to the show’s co-host Alkesh Sharotri, Samantha decoded the ways in which insulin resistance develops. Alkesh, who wears multiple hats as a wellness coach and a sports and performance nutritionist, explained that when we consume too much sugar in the body, so much that the body cannot handle it, it goes straight to the fat tissues. When this process of consuming sweet substances continues for a long time, the body starts developing insulin resistance.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Sonali Kagne, deputy consultant, endocrinology department, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, explains the consequences of insulin spikes for our health. “The food we eat is converted into glucose (sugar). Glucose is the main source of energy for every cell in our body. The glucose released after digestion of food is transported to various organs and cells through the bloodstream. Insulin-dependent cells such as the liver, skeletal muscle and adipose tissue can use glucose only in the presence of insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the beta cells of the pancreas.”

How insulin spikes can affect health:
obesity:
High insulin levels cause obesity. This promotes long-term inflammation and fibrosis in the heart muscle and may increase morbidity and mortality due to cardiovascular complications in people with obesity and diabetes.
What triggers inflammation:
This increases the levels of triglycerides and LDL cholesterol in the blood. Sometimes very high triglyceride levels can trigger inflammation in the pancreas known as pancreatitis. Chronic high cholesterol levels increase the risk of deposits forming on the inner walls of arteries that can compromise the blood supply to the organ supplied by the artery. 8. High insulin levels were also linked to Alzheimer’s disease.
What aggravates the symptoms of PCOS:
High levels of insulin aggravate PCOS symptoms in genetically predisposed women. It interferes with the hormones produced by the pituitary gland (FSH and LH), resulting in irregular menstrual cycles.

Decreases sex hormone production:
High insulin levels reduce the production of sex hormones, bind globulin from the liver and indirectly increase the concentration of free testosterone in the blood in women with PCOS. This high level of the male hormone increases acne, oily skin and unwanted coarse hair on the face or body in women with PCOS. It can also promote temporary hair loss in women.
