Prithviraj Sukumaran says Vilayath Buddha is not inspired by Pushpa
At the event held at Lulu Mall in Kochi, Prithviraj said that Vilayath Buddha is based on the novel of the same name by GR Indugopan. Its screenplay was jointly written by the writer and Rajesh Pinnadan. The film was initially to be directed by Ayyappanam Koshiyum-fame Sachi. However, due to his death in 2020, his colleague Jayan Nambiar took over.
“When Saatchi first conceived the idea and brought it to me, Pushpa had not yet come out. Then, we did not know that another film about a sandalwood smuggler was in the works. Or that after its release, it would become a worldwide phenomenon. Unfortunately, when Vilayathe Buddha was about to be completed, both Pushpa’s films were released and the character became a sensation. We accepted it (in the teaser),” Prithviraj said.
He also said that he understands that anyone who has not read the novel would think that it was inspired by Pushpa. The actor also mentioned that the Pushpa dialogue may not even end up in the film, adding, “The character (of Double Mohanan) bears no resemblance to Pushpa.”
