‘Don’t know what it means…’, what did Jaishankar say on India’s relations with Russia-US

Singapore: Foreign Minister S Jaishankar reached Singapore on Saturday on a three-day visit. During this, he met the Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and gave his address on #WhyBharatMatters at the Institute of South Asian Studies. During this, he answered questions on India’s relations with Russia and America. He said India’s relationship with these countries is based on a policy of balancing in various ways and this has been possible by dealing with each of them on a non-exclusive basis due to India’s strong non-aligned culture.

Jaishankar, who is on a three-day visit to Singapore, addressed questions regarding India’s relations with these two countries after a lecture session on his book ‘Why India Matters’ at the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) of the National University of Singapore (NUS). Made these comments.

He said that India’s relations with Russia and America are based on the policy of establishing balance in various ways. He said that this has been possible by treating each of them on a non-specialized basis. He was asked how India is able to balance its relations with both Russia and America.

Jaishankar compared India’s relations with Russia and the US to India’s relations with Israel and Palestine and referred to dealing with the countries on a non-exclusive basis. He said, ‘When I come to Israel-Palestine, I will take this argument with me. You know, today how are we able to establish good relations with Russia, good relations with Europe, good relations with America, good relations with any other country.

Jaishankar said, ‘Countries which have strong non-aligned cultures do not have this dilemma, because they have already, in a way, made their choice. You know, they have compromised with a large group on a particular issue. The countries which are not part of any alliance will have to think about this themselves.

Jaishankar admitted that this is the first time he has heard someone describing (India) as ‘Young America’ and said, ‘I honestly don’t know what to make of that.’
