US President Donald Trump on Friday expressed optimism about the ongoing trade discussion between the United States and India, while praising the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Talking to reporters at the American Attorney swearing -in ceremony for New Jersey Alina Habba, Trump described PM Modi as a “very smart man” and a “great friend”.
“Prime Minister Modi was here recently, and we have always been very good friends,” said Trump. “India is one of the most tarfing countries in the world … he is very smart. He (PM Modi) is a very smart man and a great friend of mine. We had a very good conversation. I think it is very well working between India and our country. And I want to say that you have a great Prime Minister.”
His comment followed PM Modi’s visit to America in February, during which the two leaders announced a plan to negotiate in the first phase of a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) after a decline in 2025 to increase economic cooperation.
PM Modi remembers Bandhan with Trump
Earlier this week, PM Modi reflected his relationship with Trump, with a decisive moment citing the Houda Modi incident during Trump’s first term.
PM Modi said, “I was touched by his courage and his faith in me.” He also appreciated Trump for his flexibility after avoiding an attempt to murder during his campaign.
To put 25% tariff on imported vehicles
In a major policy change, Trump announced 25% tariff on all imported vehicles set to be effective on 2 April. With a view to promoting domestic manufacturing, this decision will affect all vehicles sold in the US, in which American brands have been gathered abroad.
“This is very exciting for domestic manufacturing,” said Trump. “We need more car manufacturers producing inside our country, not to sell here.”
Trump says for “mutual tariff” on India
Trump has previously criticized India’s trade policies, calling it one of the most conservationist economies.
Trump said in February, “We will soon impose mutual tariffs – they charge us, we accuse them.” “Whatever company or a country, such as India or China, fees, we want to be fair; therefore, mutual.”
He specifically pointed to India’s high automobile tariff, saying, “India charges more than 100%of the US Auto Tariff.”
During a joint session by the Congress, Trump announced that the US has been advantage to decades by almost every country including the European Union, China, Brazil and Mexico, and vowed to end the trend.
“We will not let this happen,” he said.
Stress increases near the deadline of April 2
To be effective soon with Trump’s tariff, bilateral trade agreement remains a possible avenue to resolve disputes.
