The FBI identified the attacker as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, yet conspiracy theories continued to proliferate. “This looks very dramatic,” one user posted on X, which has been viewed more than a million times. “No one in that crowd heard a real gunshot. I don’t believe it. I don’t believe that,” the user wrote about the shooting at Trump’s rally.
However, experts dismissed the deep state theories. “Events of political violence tend to give rise to conspiracy theories and false narratives when people try to twist the event to suit their various agendas,” said Megan Squire, deputy director of data analytics at the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project.
