Here are 4 of the best excerpts from the conversation between the two authors:
Will Zendaya become a director?
Spielberg questioned Villeneuve about working with the actors, and Villeneuve observed that Zendaya took a particular interest in his direction, coming to the set and watching and listening to him even when she was not in the scene. “Someone who spent a lot of time listening behind the camera – Zendaya. he is very clever. I wouldn’t be surprised if one day we find out that she wants to go behind (the camera).
‘One of the greatest science fiction films ever’
Spielberg praised Dune: Part Two. “It truly is a visual epic, and it’s also full of deeply, deeply drawn characters. Yet when you look at it in proportion to the film’s running time, the dialogue is very sparse. This is such a cinema. The shots are gorgeous, yet there’s no angle or single setup that’s ostentatious. You’ve made one of the most amazing science fiction movies I’ve ever seen,” he said.
desert like sea
Spielberg also talked about how Dune: Part Two made him crave water. “For as much sand as there is in this film, it’s really about water – the sacred water you yearn for; Green meadows and blue waters of life. You filmed the desert to look like an ocean, a sea. The sand worms were like sea snakes and that scene (of Paul) surfing on the sand worms is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen. But you made the desert look like liquid,” he said.
In the list of ‘world-builders’
Spielberg lauded Villeneuve as one of the short list of ‘world-builders’ in Hollywood. “There are filmmakers who are creators of the world, and we know it’s not a long list, but we know who a lot of them are.” Spielberg then named all the filmmakers, including Georges Méliès, Walt Disney, Stanley Kubrick, George Lucas, George Pal, Ray Harryhausen, Federico Fellini, Tim Burton, Wes Anderson, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Christopher… Nolan, Ridley Scott, Guillermo del Toro. Spielberg said, “But the list is not that long, and I deeply, strongly believe that you are one of the newest members of that list.”
