The answer to rapid weight loss may lie in genes. A recent study led by Dr Henry Chung of the University of Essex tried to find the answer to an age-old wonder – why some people lose weight very fast while others struggle to shed extra kilos. Let’s struggle. The study states that certain genetic variations can significantly affect a person’s body and how he or she responds to exercise, especially when it comes to weight loss.

The study looked at the program over an eight-week period and how different genetic profiles affected weight loss. The results were surprising, especially since participants with specific genetic markers were losing significant weight compared to others, even after following the exact exercise regimen.

This study was conducted on 38 participants. These participants, aged 20 to 40, were previously inactive. These participants were further divided into two categories – one group was put into a structured running routine, while the other group had to follow their normal lifestyle.
The first group was asked to do outdoor running sessions – initially for 20 minutes and later for 30 minutes for eight weeks. They were also asked to follow their normal diet.

The study found that after following the exercise regimen for eight weeks, people with specific genetic predispositions lost significantly more weight than others. It was observed that individuals with more genetic markers lost about 5 kg in weight, while others lost about 2 kg.
To understand the mechanism, researchers studied each participant’s DNA – they examined genetic variations known as single nucleotide polymorphisms. It was observed that 17 specific SNPs were associated with weight loss. Individuals with greater genetic diversity lost weight faster than others.

However, it was also observed that despite the absence of genetic variations associated with rapid weight loss, exercise can be beneficial for every body. Every participant, regardless of their genetic variations, showed significant improvements in cardiovascular fitness after an eight-week exercise regimen.
