Doctors, including those from Uttar Pradesh’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, said the constant pressure and friction from the tight waist rope can cause skin irritation over a long period of time. According to the authors, a 70-year-old woman sought medical treatment for a painful skin ulcer on her right side, that is, between the ribs and hip bone, which had been present for 18 months and was refusing to heal.

The authors noted that the skin around the ulcers had lost its pigmentation. He also told that the woman had her petticoat tied tightly around her waist under her saree.

In the second case, a woman in her late 60s was reported to have an ulcer on her right flank that had not healed for two years.

The authors wrote, “A woman in her late 60s reported a two-year history of an ulcerated wound on her right flank. She had worn a lugda daily for 40 years. A lugda was worn around the waist without a petticoat.” and is tied very tightly,” the authors wrote, as quoted PTI,

The authors further reported that biopsies revealed that both women had Marjolin ulcer, also known as squamous cell carcinoma (skin cancer). In the second woman, cancer had spread to one of her groin lymph nodes at the time of diagnosis, the authors said.

The authors warn that the constant pressure of tight clothing can lead to non-healing ulcers and possible skin cancer.

“Continuous pressure on the groin often leads to dermal atrophy, which eventually breaks down and forms erosions or ulcers. Over time, the abnormality developed into a non-healing ulcer, causing her anxiety and distress. On consulting a dermatologist, the woman said she was diagnosed with skin cancer, which had become worse due to the friction and pressure caused by tying the saree tightly around her waist.
