On 5 March 2025, the US Home Safety Department (DHS) said in a notification issued in the Federal Register that migrants will now have to share information about their social media profiles. This new rule was signed by the then President Donald Trump on 20 January 2025 on the executive order. The main objective of this order is to strengthen national security and prevent potential threats. Meanwhile, it has been clear that the immigration officers will only ask for information about social media handles, not passwords.

In which applications social media handle will be given information
According to reports, this rule may apply to more than 35 lakh migrants every year. The US Department of Homeland Security has given the public 60 days to react to this proposal, after which it will be decided whether it is implemented or amended. The US Department of Homeland Security has described 9 immigration categories, which have been proposed to share social media information during the application.

Monitoring of social media continued even before
Social media monitoring is not a new part of the American immigration process. The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) have been reviewing online activities of applicants earlier. In 2016, the USCIS created a social media division to keep an eye on the activities of the applicants.

When and how the rules regarding social media
The 2016 USCIS implemented the Extreme Waiting Policy by the Trump administration in 2017 after the formation of the social media division, which made the social media investigation of visa applicants mandatory. In 2019, the US State Department made it mandatory for visa applicants to give social media information. Subsequently, social media investigation expanded in 2021, which also included platforms in China and Russia. Now in 2025, under the Executive Order 14161, now social media information has been made mandatory in 9 immigration forms.
