New Delhi. American billionaire Elon Musk’s company Starlink has introduced a technology called Direct-to-Sale. In this technology, neither a SIM card nor a mobile tower is required to send text and voice messages from the mobile and to use the Internet. In simple words, direct-to-sell (DTC) technology satellite is a communication system that allows smartphones to be connected directly to satellites, allowing users to call, text and use the Internet without a traditional mobile tower.
Direct-to-sale technology will neither require a special mobile handset nor any special hardware or software to be installed in the mobile phone. That means only the mobile you have will be able to connect to the satellite. The satellites used for this technology have special eNodeB modems, which function like mobile phone towers, but in space. These satellites send signals directly to smartphones, allowing users to get connectivity even in remote areas.

When was DTC launched
The first set of Starlink’s direct-to-sale services was launched on January 2, 2024. Right now only text has been sent through it. The service will be fully activated for texting and calling as well as data services in 2025. SpaceX is deploying Starlink satellites in space on a large scale with direct to sale capability. The direct-to-sale satellites will be launched initially on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket and then on Starship. The satellites in orbit will instantly connect to the Starlink constellation via laser backhaul to provide global connectivity.
Partnership with many telecom operators
Elon Musk’s company Starlink has partnered with telecom operators in many countries of the world to implement direct-to-sell technology so that users can get satellite connectivity along with the existing mobile network. Starlink has tied up with T-Mobile (USA), Optus (Australia), Rogers (Canada), One NZ (New Zealand), KDDI (Japan), Salt (Switzerland), Ntel (Chile) and Ntel (Peru).
There will be a revolution in Internet of Things (IoT)
Starlink’s direct-to-sale technology will write a new chapter in the field of Internet of Things (IoT), experts believe. This technology will help in connecting millions of devices simultaneously to satellite. This will be of great help in logistics, agriculture and remote monitoring. This technology will be beneficial during emergencies, in which connectivity can be established even in areas without network coverage.
