The study found that age and the type of dementia play an important role in determining life expectancy.

Whenever someone is diagnosed with dementia, they are filled with questions about their survival and how much time they have left. Typically, this is a difficult question for health care professionals to grapple with. However, a recent study led by Chiara C. Brook of the Erasmus MC University Medical Center provides estimates on life expectancy after being diagnosed with dementia. Study findings:

The study published in BMJ analyzed 261 studies involving more than 5.5 million people with dementia. Researchers observed that a patient’s age plays a significant role in their life expectancy after being diagnosed with dementia. It was observed that when women were diagnosed with dementia at the age of 60, their average life expectancy was 8.9 years, while women diagnosed at the age of 85 could expect to live approximately 4.5 years. Overall survival was shorter in men, ranging from 5.7 years at diagnosis at age 65 to 2.2 years at age 85.

Life Expectancy and Age Factors of Dementia:

It has been observed that the life span of a person affected with dementia reduces at an early age. The study found that when dementia is diagnosed at age 65, a person’s life is shortened by 13 years, but when diagnosed at age 85, their life expectancy is only added by two years. Decreases. Dementia type and life expectancy:

The life expectancy of a person is also determined by the type of dementia affected. The study found that people affected by Alzheimer’s disease lived 1.4 years longer than those affected by other types of dementia such as vascular dementia or Lewy body dementia.

“Almost a third of the remaining life expectancy lived in a nursing home, with more than half moving into a nursing home within five years after a dementia diagnosis. “Prognosis after dementia diagnosis is highly dependent on individual and clinical characteristics, which provide the potential for personalized prognostic information and care planning,” read an excerpt from the study.
