Dev Patel is a big fan of Shahrukh Khan. The Oscar nominee, who is promoting his directorial debut Monkey Man, revealed that the 1997 Shah Rukh Khan starrer made a huge impact on him as an audience. The film was Koyla, which was directed by Rakesh Roshan and Shahrukh played a silent role in it. Speaking in an interview with Draw Your Box, an excerpt of which was uploaded to X by fan pages, Dev shared his memories of watching the film and how its images stayed with him for a long time. He said: “I remember a movie. You know, I don’t even remember the plot very well, because I saw it when I was really young, but it was Shahrukh Khan and this movie was coal. And he was like, looking at these red eyes and he was drenched in sweat and he had this, like, mullet haircut and this sword and it was, you know, like a brutal revenge epic where he lost his voice. Di was forced to swallow hot coals and felt as if he had got everything. You know, it’s kind of like me. “My identity is kind of shaped by all these influences.”
Koyla was a 1997 action thriller film directed by Rakesh Roshan. It starred Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Amrish Puri in lead roles.

If that’s not enough proof of Dev’s reverence for the Bollywood star, he had mentioned Shah Rukh’s films during a fan interaction a few days ago. This was during a recent Reddit AMA session, where a fan asked, “What are your favorite Bollywood movies? Did any of them inspire your writing/directing for Monkey Man? To this Dev said, “Whatever Shahrukh Khan does.”
Monkey Man stars Shobhita Dhulipala, Sikandar Kher, Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar, Aditi Kalakunte and Makarand Deshpande in lead roles along with Dev. The film’s official synopsis reads, “After years of suppressed anger, Kidd finds a way to infiltrate the city’s sinister elite quarter. As her childhood trauma fades away, her mysteriously scarred hands launch an explosive campaign of vengeance to settle scores with those who took everything from her.
