Vikram Misri will replace Vinay Kwatra.
Vikram Misri, a 1989 batch Indian Foreign Service officer, will be appointed as the new Foreign Secretary of India from July 15.
Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA) Vikram Misri will be appointed the next Foreign Secretary on June 28. Misri, a 1989 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, will take over as India’s new Foreign Secretary from July 15. He will replace current Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra.
Misri’s appointment comes amid various foreign policy challenges. These challenges include India’s bitter relations with China due to the East Ladakh border dispute. It is worth noting that Misri served as India’s ambassador to China from 2019-2021, before he was appointed Deputy NSA.
Born in Srinagar in 1964, Misri completed his early education in Gwalior and earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Hindu College, University of Delhi. He later did an MBA from XLRI.
His diplomatic career with the Indian Foreign Service began in 1989 when he worked in Indian missions in Brussels and Tunis. In his career spanning nearly 35 years, Misri has held several positions, including as India’s ambassador to Spain (2014-2016) and Myanmar (2016-2018). Apart from this, he has also been a part of several Indian missions including Pakistan, the US, Germany, Belgium and Sri Lanka.
In the last few years, Misri has also received respect as a China expert. As an ambassador, he last worked in Beijing from January 2019 to December 2021. For your information, let us tell you that during this time there were clashes in the Galwan Valley.
Misri’s background in diplomacy is indeed impressive. The officer also has the rare distinction of having served as private secretary to three prime ministers: Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi.
As for his most recent ambassadorial role, he was in Beijing, where he served as one of the State Department’s leading experts on China affairs. In January 2022, he was appointed to the National Security Council Secretariat
The 59-year-old diplomat has played a key role during the clashes between India and China during this period. For those who don’t know, tensions between the two countries escalated after the 2020 standoff in eastern Ladakh and the subsequent clash in the Galwan Valley.
