India’s mobile internet data consumption is the highest in the world. This has been revealed in a report by Ericsson. It has been said in the report that 5G is also expanding rapidly in India and India will also be included among the leading countries of the world in adopting 6G.
India is also one of the fastest growing countries in the world in terms of mobile data traffic. New Delhi. India is not only involved in the digital race, but has now reached the position of leading it. The latest Mobility Report (EMR) of Swedish company Ericsson is a witness to this. According to the report, every active smartphone user in India is consuming the most data in the world. This consumption is 36 GB data per month, which is much more than other countries of the world. The report estimates that by 2031 this consumption may increase to 65 GB per month. It is not just a matter of data consumption, the speed of 5G and the upcoming 6G era also shows Ericsson’s report showing India standing at the forefront of the future tech world.
Ericsson Mobility Report suggests that there will be 394 million 5G subscriptions in India by the end of 2025, meaning one in every three mobile users will be on 5G. By 2031, 5G subscriptions will cross the 1 billion mark. This means that at that time approximately 79% of mobile users in India will be on 5G. This is not only going to change the speed of the internet but will also give a new height to business, apps, streaming and digital services.
FWA demand also increased
This expansion of 5G is not limited to phones only. The demand for Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) is also increasing rapidly in India. By September 2025, Jio and Airtel together will reach 12 million FWA connections. The data consumption of FWA users is also very high, due to which India’s data traffic is continuously touching new heights. The report says that by 2031, about 1.4 billion people worldwide will use FWA broadband and 90% of these users will connect to the internet through 5G. India is going to become its biggest centre.
Sharp increase in mobile data traffic also
India is also one of the fastest growing countries in the world in terms of mobile data traffic. There was a 20% jump in data traffic between the third quarter of 2024 and 2025, the largest contribution of which was from India and China. By the end of 2025, 43% of the world’s mobile data traffic will run on 5G networks and by 2031 this figure is expected to reach 83%.
India will be among the countries to launch 6G
The launch of 6G is also mentioned in the Ericsson Mobility Report and here too India is not lagging behind. EMR says that the first countries in the world to launch 6G will include America, Japan, South Korea, China and India. If deployment plans proceed ahead of schedule, global 6G subscriptions could cross the 180 million mark by 2031.
