On a rain-soaked Saturday at Paris Fashion Week, the world of luxury witnessed a spectacle of contrasts, where the adventurous spirit of punk mingled with cool luxury and historic elegance. The shows blurred the lines between rebellion and sophistication, presenting collections that moved with the times – evoking medieval serfs with a modern twist and embracing minimalist aesthetics reminiscent of the 1990s.

Here are some highlights from Saturday’s fall-winter 2024 show:

Hermes Under the Stars: A Deep Exploration of Quiet Luxury

The pursuit of “quiet luxury” – a phrase deeply linked to Nadège Vanhee-Cybulsky’s tenure at Hermès – was once again at the forefront of the Paris runways on Saturday, as the French designer presented his latest interpretation of leather’s infinite possibilities. Was unveiled. This season, however, the narrative took a darker, more introspective turn, featuring black leather looks that evoked the deep, contemplative tones of the late French painter Soulages. Glimmering against the backdrop of the black starry night, these pieces sometimes took on a fiery appearance, reminiscent of studded, armour-like vests. Yet, this undercurrent of ferocity was skillfully balanced with the underlying softness of the collection’s cuts and the meticulous precision of its details.

Notched buckles and slight ribcage on skin-tight pants demonstrated Wenhey-Cybulski’s adeptness at blending Hermès’ age-old craftsmanship with innovative design. Amidst this deep palette, muted glimpses emerge, weaving poetically through the collection. This emphasis on restrained elegance is quintessential to Vanhee-Cybulski’s vision, where richness of materials and craftsmanship triumph without the need for ostentation.

Westwood: Nature, surf and a bunch of badasses

Despite a persistent Paris drizzle, K-pop star Sandara Park led the pack in Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, mesmerizing onlookers in a punk-hued corset adorned with pearls and a “Nobles” sign amid camera flashes. Waved. The show opened with a whimsical performance in a brightly lit atrium, where musicians conjured natural sounds among tree stumps, setting a whimsical tone that reflected the historical and rebellious spirit of the collection.

The early artists took the audience back in time, showcasing the essence of a serf, a medieval agricultural labourer, amidst contemporary blends. Designs cleverly incorporated leggings, jockstraps resembling codpieces, mystical talisman pendants and tear-shaped cutouts on thick knit sweaters that reflected age-old stories.

Both male and female models performed with swag, reflecting the iconic Westwood 80s punk ethos through standout pieces such as large blue conical bra corsets and big-shouldered dresses. The runway was a canvas for eccentric, edgy looks that blended contrasting historical references – like a silver top with an AA breastplate that reminded King Arthur and his knights of Britain’s glam rock heyday with a disco sheen .

This collection, a blend of daring punk spirit and an illustrious history, confirms the brand’s mastery at combining diverse influences, crafting an entire rebellion.

Carven Designer’s Second Year

Elegant sophistication, minimalism, and a hint of casualness continue to define Carven. The storied house, originally founded by Marie Louise Carven in 1945, has evolved under the guidance of various male creative directors since its reboot in 2009 and 2018. Stepping into this lineage as the first female leader since its reboot, Louise Trotter presented her second collection on Saturday, deftly weaving the brand’s 1950s origins with a minimalist aesthetic reminiscent of the 1990s.

The show opened with a statement piece: a brown round-shouldered coat that was loose and indicative of the new direction Trotter is taking Carven toward.

This piece set the stage for a collection brimming with dimensions and notions. A striking dress featured trompe l’oeil effect, cleverly designed to appear two-dimensional. An oversized gray jacket, casually draped over bare skin, was a prime example of the collection’s subtle allure, exposing skin in a way that didn’t compromise sophistication.
