Taking a daily multivitamin may help global cognition and episodic memory, according to new research published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Global cognition can be defined as overall cognitive functioning, whereas episodic memory involves recalling past events.
Part of the Cocoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study (COSMOS), the research explored how and whether cocoa flavanols or multivitamins could potentially reduce the chances of conditions such as cognitive decline, heart disease, stroke and cancer.
In the current study, which is the third in the series, a subgroup of 573 people where given cognitive assessments in the clinic, whereas in previous studies, they were tested via call and the Internet. After two years, a “modest” improvement was observed, along with an increase in episodic memory. When the results of all three studies were combined, there was strong evidence of improvements in global cognition and episodic memory.
